Immunoexpression of stem cell markers CD44, CD133, ALDH1-2, and LGR5 in colorectal carcinoma and their association with clinicopathological tumor characteristics
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2026AO2153
Highlights ■ Colorectal carcinoma originates from within cancer stem cells of the large intestine. ■ Tissue levels of ALDH1-2 and LGR5 proteins were associated with greater tumor aggressiveness. ■ Discovery of signaling pathways can improve cancer treatments that control cancer stem cells. ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate the association of CD44, CD133, ALDH1-2, and LGR5 expression with clinicopathological tumor variables. Methods: Twenty-eight adult patients with colorectal carcinoma who underwent curative surgery were included in the study. Paraffin-embedded samples were subjected to […]

Thyroid cartilage resection surgery for metastases of clear cell renal cell carcinoma: case report and literature review
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2026RC2002
ABSTRACT Laryngeal cartilage is an exceptionally rare site of metastasis, with fewer than 63 cases reported in the literature; prostate, kidney, breast, and lung cancers are the most common primary tumors. In addition to this extreme rarity, most published reports are limited to descriptions of the lesion and radiologic findings, without detailing management strategies or follow-up outcomes. The limited number of studies exploring surgical intervention have primarily described superficial resections or conventional laryngectomies. In this context, this case report describes […]

Pulmonary nodules near fissures in hepatocellular carcinoma: assessing their clinical significance
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2025AO1895
Highlights ■ Typical perifissural nodules remain radiologically stable with no metastatic potential. ■ Only two nodules progressed to metastasis (one atypical perifissural nodule and one non-perifissural nodule). ■ Atypical and non-perifissural nodules require closer follow-up. ■ Annual growth rate was a strong marker of malignancy. ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate whether pulmonary nodules adjacent to fissures, particularly perifissural nodules detected on chest computed tomography in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, can be reliably classified as benign based on their radiological characteristics. Methods: […]

Complex diagnosis and management of metastatic esophagogastric junction adenocarcinoma with colonic and meningeal involvement
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2025RC1460
ABSTRACT This report presents a case of a 59-year-old male diagnosed with metastatic esophagogastric junction adenocarcinoma, who presented with mild dysphagia and vertigo. Brain magnetic resonance imaging initially showed no abnormalities. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a vegetative lesion in the distal esophagus, and concurrent colonoscopy identified a laterally-spreading tumor in the transverse colon. Immunohistochemistry confirmed a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma, suggesting an upper gastrointestinal origin. Further investigation of the worsening neurological symptoms led to the identification of leptomeningeal carcinomatosis via cerebrospinal […]

Socioeconomic inequities in prostate cancer care: private versus public treatment settings pose a significant impact on overall survival
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2025AO0851
Highlights ■ Men with metastatic prostate cancer in the public system have access to fewer treatment lines. ■ Survival in the public system was 3 years shorter than that in the private setting (78 versus 115 months). ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the impact of assistance from public and private health systems on the overall survival of patients with metastatic prostate cancer. Methods: A total of 213 patients with metastatic prostate cancer treated at the A.C. Camargo Cancer Center, either in […]

Liver-first approach to the treatment of patients with synchronous colorectal liver metastases: a systematic review and meta-analysis
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024RW0596
ABSTRACT Objective The optimal approach to the treatment of colorectal carcinoma and synchronous liver metastases remains controversial. The objective of this review was to analyze the outcomes of adopting the liver-first approach for the treatment of patients with colorectal cancer with synchronous hepatic metastases who initially underwent systemic chemotherapy and/or resection of the metastatic lesions and primary colorectal carcinoma. Methods This review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The MEDLINE, EMBASE, […]

Metastatic diffuse follicular variant papillary thyroid cancer without cervical lymph node metastasis presenting with symptoms related to hypopituitarism
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023RC0229
ABSTRACT In this article, we present a case of diffuse follicular variant papillary thyroid carcinoma with pituitary metastasis, which is a rare cause of pituitary metastasis. The follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma is an uncommon variant of papillary carcinoma. A 74-year-old male was presented with weakness, fatigue, and a decreased appetite. The patient was diagnosed with secondary adrenal and thyroid insufficiencies. Imaging revealed a pituitary mass with suprasellar extension, right cavernous sinus invasion, and optic chiasm compression. Thyroid ultrasonography […]

Squamous cell carcinoma implantation in gastrostomy orifice. Case report
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2020RC5409
ABSTRACT Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy is used to provide enteral nutritional support for patients with obstructive oropharyngeal or esophageal neoplasms. The placement of the catheter is considered safe, with few complications. Despite this, a specific complication that is considered rare, has been increasingly described in the literature, i.e., metastasis of head and neck cancer in the gastrostomy stoma. In this report, we described a case of metastasis of squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx in the gastrostomy site, and discussed the […]

Pneumatosis intestinalis after etoposide-based chemotherapy in a patient with metastatic small cell lung cancer: successful conservative management of a rare condition
DOI: 10.1590/S1679-45082016RC3597
ABSTRACT A 69-year-old male patient, smoker, was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer metastatic to lung, liver and central nervous system. He received chemotherapy with carboplatin AUC 5 on day 1 and etoposide 100mg/m2 on days 1, 2 and 3. During the first cycle, the patient presented with febrile neutropenia and abdominal distension. Chest, abdomen and pelvis computed tomography scan was performed and detected gas dissecting the wall of sigmoid colon extending to the mesosigmoid. Patient had no abdominal pain, […]

Stereotactic radiosurgery for spinal metastases: a literature review
DOI: 10.1590/S1679-45082013000200020
OBJECTIVE: The spine is the most common location for bone metastases. Since cure is not possible, local control and relief of symptoms is the basis for treatment, which is grounded on the use of conventional radiotherapy. Recently, spinal radiosurgery has been proposed for the local control of spinal metastases, whether as primary or salvage treatment. Consequently, we carried out a literature review in order to analyze the indications, efficacy, and safety of radiosurgery in the treatment of spinal metastases. METHODS: […]
