Atrophic hypothyroidism associated with thyrotropin receptor antibodies
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2025RC1400
ABSTRACT Hypothyroidism is most frequently caused by Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. While thyrotropin receptor antibodies are well-known in Graves’ disease-induced hyperthyroidism, their role in hypothyroidism is emerging. We report the case of a 37-year-old woman with facial and periorbital edema, weight gain, and hoarseness suggestive of hypothyroidism. Elevated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH; 131mIU/L) and decreased free thyroxine (0.2ng/dL, 2.6pmol/L) levels confirmed this diagnosis. Laboratory findings showed dyslipidemia, impaired renal function, elevated creatine phosphokinase levels, and anemia. Despite negative results for thyroid peroxidase […]

Myopericytoma of the thoracic spine in a pregnant woman: a case report on the management of a rare neoplasm
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2025RC1150
ABSTRACT Myopericytomas are perivascular myoid neoplasms that rarely exhibit malignant characteristics. They usually arise in the dermis or subcutaneous tissue and exceptionally involve deep soft tissues, with spinal localization being rare. We report the case of a previously healthy 32-year-old pregnant woman who presented with pain in the interscapular region and progressive loss of lower limb strength. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a solid neoplastic mass at the T3 level, with spinal canal invasion and spinal cord signal abnormalities. The pregnancy […]

Alcohol consumption among pregnant women in Brazilian capitals: How many, where, and who are they?
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2025AO0754
Highlights ■ Any alcohol consumption during pregnancy: prevalence of 11.5%. ■ Excessive alcohol consumption during pregnancy: prevalence of 3.0%. ■ Risk factors: older age, low education, and Indigenous ethnicity. ■ Protective factors: being married and living in Northern Brazil. ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the prevalence and factors associated with alcohol consumption among pregnant women. Methods: This cross-sectional study examined pregnant women living in Brazilian capitals using information collected by the Noncommunicable Chronic Disease Risk Factor Surveillance System (Vigitel) between 2006 […]

The use of convalescent plasma therapy in the management of a pregnant woman with COVID-19: a case report
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2022RC6550
ABSTRACT The coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) is responsible for the current worldwide pandemic. Treatment and prophylaxis are still under investigation. Convalescent plasma therapy could be an alternative. We report a case of a 41-year-old patient, at 28 weeks of gestation, was hospitalized with COVID-19. On the 10th day after onset of symptoms, the clinical picture worsened, and she required high-flow oxygen therapy (30L/minute), with 92% oxygen saturation, and chest X-ray showing mild bilateral opacities at lung bases. Blood tests showed […]

Genetic analysis of products of conception. Should we abandon classic karyotyping methodology?
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2021AO5945
ABSTRACT Objective: To compare the results obtained by the classic and molecular methodology in the analysis of products of conception, the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Methods: Retrospective non-randomized analysis of results obtained from product of conception samples submitted to genetic evaluation, from 2012 to 2017. The evaluations were performed using cytogenetics and/or chromosomal microarray analysis or arrays. Results: Forty samples were analyzed using classic cytogenetics, of which 10% showed no cell growth, 50% had normal results and 40% […]

Prevalence of rectovaginal colonization by group B Streptococcus in pregnant women seen at prenatal care program of a health organization
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2020AO4920
ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the prevalence of group B Streptococci in pregnant women of a corporate health program, as well as the epidemiological correlations. Methods This retrospective study used medical records of patients who participated of the prenatal care program at a private hospital in the city of São Paulo (SP), Brazil, from 2015 to 2016. Those who abandoned the program or had incomplete data in their medical records were excluded. Quantitative variables were described by means, standard deviations, median, […]

Consensus on the investigation of thrombophilia in women and clinical management
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2019AE4510
ABSTRACT Objective To standardize the investigation and clinical management of women with laboratory and/or clinical abnormalities suggestive of thrombophilia, in order to optimize antithrombotic approach and indication of laboratory tests. Methodology A discussion was carried out among 107 physicians (gynecologists/obstetricians, hematologists and vascular surgeons) present at a forum held at the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, in São Paulo (SP), Brazil. As a minimum criterion, 80% agreement was established in the voting to each recommendation of conduct in the final document. […]
