Outcomes of multiple myeloma in patients with access to novel drugs
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2026AO1748
Highlights ■ Accessibility to novel drugs for multiple myeloma render excellent outcomes. ■ Hemoglobin at diagnosis is a significant risk factor. ■ Age also impacts outcomes. ■ Hemoglobin and age-based model fared better than the International Staging System. ABSTRACT Objective: To report the outcomes of patients with multiple myeloma who had access to novel drugs in Brazil, and to establish a local benchmark. Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in São Paulo, Brazil. We […]

Severe bleeding diathesis after dental extractions: a complex case of coagulation disturbances in a patient with multiple myeloma
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2026RC1902
ABSTRACT This case report describes a male patient diagnosed with multiple myeloma who experienced significant bleeding from both the maxillary and mandibular dental sockets following dental extraction, lasting several days. Laboratory tests revealed prolonged prothrombin time and thrombin time, accompanied by reduced factor VII levels. Initial management with intravenous vitamin K and fresh frozen plasma failed to achieve hemostasis. Despite the risk of thrombosis, low-dose tranexamic acid was initiated, resulting in effective hemorrhage control and improved healing of the alveolar […]

Immunogenicity profile after COVID-19 vaccination in patients with onco-hematological diseases
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0089
Highlights Lymphoproliferative disorders were associated with lower vaccine response rates than other disorders. Previous exposure to COVID-19 before vaccination was associated with higher antibody values. The duration of anti-B-lymphocyte therapy related to vaccination had an effect on response rates. The incidence of adverse effects of patients with onco-hematological diseases was similar to that of the healthy population. ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the influence of onco-hematological pathologies on seroconversion to COVID-19 vaccines, in addition to the effects of chemotherapy treatment […]

Cross-cultural translation and adaptation of Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy – Multiple Myeloma tool – MM1 and LEU3 – for Portuguese
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2022AO4457
ABSTRACT Objective To describe of the translation from English to Portuguese and adaption process of subitems of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy – Multiple Myeloma. Methods In the first phase, translations from English into Portuguese of two subitems of Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy – Multiple Myeloma were performed. Subsequently, a consensus and back translation were conducted, and, finally, translation and back translations were reviewed by four independent bilingual experts. In the second phase, the translated subitems were applied, […]

Multiple myeloma complicated with pseudomonas endocartiditis
DOI: 10.1590/S1679-45082012000400017
Patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma are more susceptible to infections which are the major causes of morbidity and mortality associated to this disease. The main infectious agents involved are Gram-positive bacteria. However, after chemotherapy an increase in the incidence of Gram-negative strains is observed. These bacteria are also responsible for most cases of urinary tract infections. Here is reported a rare case in a 73-year-old man with multiple myeloma who developed endocarditis due to pseudomonas.

Autologous stem-cell transplantation for multiple myeloma: a Brazilian institution experience in 15 years of follow-up
DOI: 10.1590/S1679-45082011AO1845
ABSTRACT Objective: To determine the 5-year post-transplant survival of patients with multiple myeloma. Methods: A retrospective study in patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma submitted to autologous bone marrow transplantation at a Brazilian institution, during the period of 1993 to 2007. Results: Seventy-three patients were evaluated with a median age of 55 years. Survival in 5 years was 75% (2.4 to 60 months). Statistical analysis demonstrated statistical significance for the applied grade of response prior to treatment with autologous bone marrow […]
