Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing (TDABC) applied in a chemotherapy department of a public reference oncology hospital
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2025GS0679
Highlights ■ Using the Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing method in healthcare services enables resource maximization with better control of processes and financing. ■ The estimated cost of treating a patient per antineoplastic session is R$ 470,35. ■ Such analyses can help establish pricing strategies and identify necessary adjustments to the financing model in oncology. ABSTRACT Objective: To identify the costs pertaining to the preparation and administration process of each chemotherapy treatment session in a public oncology hospital belonging to the Brazilian […]

Hepatorenal Syndrome: direct treatment costs and characteristics of patients admitted to intensive care
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2025GS0390
Highlights ■ The treatment of Hepatorenal Syndrome places a huge economic burden on healthcare systems. ■ Cost analysis studies of Hepatorenal Syndrome management can help to rationally allocate resources in healthcare. ■ Timely diagnosis and management of Hepatorenal Syndrome may reduce mortality, resource utilization and costs. ABSTRACT Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe the direct medical costs incurred in Brazil for the treatment of Hepatorenal Syndrome in intensive care and intermediate therapy care units, and to investigate […]

Clinical outcomes and direct cost analysis of rotator cuff repair surgery
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024GS0473
Highlights Rotator cuff repair surgery improves clinical outcomes and quality of life. Surgical procedures were highly effective with low complication rates. Arthroscopic surgery was associated with higher costs than open surgery. ABSTRACT Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and functional outcomes in patients who underwent surgical treatment for rotator cuff tears using open and arthroscopic techniques, and to evaluate the direct costs involved. Methods Retrospective cohort study with analysis of the data of patients who […]

Cost and time of hospitalization for elderly people with bone fractures in a reference hospital
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024GS0493
Highlights Bone fractures were more frequent in women. The mortality rate among patients was 9.6%. The main trauma mechanism was falling from standing height. The total hospitalization cost ranged from R$2,006.53 to R$106,912.74. The mean daily cost was R$4,478.64. The longer the hospital stay for treatment, the higher the total cost. ABSTRACT Objective: To describe and analyze the aspects regarding the cost and length of stay for elderly patients with bone fractures in a tertiary reference hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional […]

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on private hospitals in Brazil
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0174
Highlights Sanitary restriction measures had a strong impact on usual performance indicators from a selected group of private hospitals in Brazil. Pregnancies and deliveries continued to constitute an important proportion of hospital admissions because they did not depend on external restrictions. Hospital costs increased due to increased utilization of more expensive Personal Protection Equipment (due to lack of availability or much higher demand). ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the operational and/or financial impacts of regulatory measures implemented by the National Agency […]

The use of serum alkaline phosphatase as a choledocholithiasis marker to mitigate the cost of magnetic resonance cholangiography
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0204
Highlights Alkaline phosphatase: sensitivity of 97.6% and specificity of 72.6% for choledocholitiasis. The average cost of cholangioresonance would have decreased by almost half for each patient in this study. ABSTRACT Objective To assess the predictive value of preoperative serum laboratory test results for identifying choledocholithiasis and reduce the use of cholangioresonance and its inherent costs. Methods Patients aged 21-69 years who underwent preoperative cholangioresonance examination at our institute were included. Patients with a history of fluctuating jaundice or biliary pancreatitis, […]

Increase in direct costs for health systems due to lupus nephritis: the case of Colombia
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2022AO6553
ABSTRACT Objective Lupus nephritis is one of the most severe complications of systemic lupus erythematosus and it has been estimated that can occur in up to 60% of patients. Direct costs of lupus nephritis have not been studied in developing countries. This study aimed to describe lupus nephritis direct costs in Colombia. Methods Administrative data from two Colombian health maintenance organizations for 2014 and 2015 was obtained. An algorithm based on the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health […]

Trends in treatment of retinal disorders in the Brazilian Public Health System over a 10-year period
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2021GS6616
ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate trends in terms of number and cost of intravitreal injection, photocoagulation and panphotocoagulation procedures performed by the Brazilian Public Health System, from 2010 to 2019. Methods: The Brazilian Public Health System Database was used as the primary source of data. Intravitreal injection, photocoagulation and panphotocoagulation procedures performed from 2010 to 2019 were investigated. Procedure prevalence and cost trends were analyzed according to year and region. Annual trends were examined using generalized linear models, with a significance […]

Robotic assisted radical prostatectomy: a different treatment for prostate cancer?
DOI: 10.1590/S1679-45082010MD1558
ABSTRACT Considering the Health Care System in Brazil, a developing country, and public healthcare policies, robotic surgery is a reality to very few citizens. Therefore, robotic assisted radical prostatectomy is far removed from the daily practice of the vast majority of Brazilian urologists. Scientific evidence of the superiority of robotic assisted radical prostatectomy does not presently justify public investments for widespread development of robotic centers. Maybe over time and with reductions in costs, robotic technology will become a more established […]
