Diabetes among women with preterm births: outcomes of a Brazilian multicenter study
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0515
Highlights Diabetes prevalence at 3.2% among women who had preterm births in Brazil. Almost half of the preterm births of pregnant women with diabetes were therapeutic. Predominance of late preterm cesarean sections with large-for-gestational-age babies. ABSTRACT Objective: The objective was to compare the maternal and perinatal characteristics and outcomes between women with and without diabetes in a Brazilian cohort of women with preterm births. Methods: This was an ancillary analysis of the Brazilian Multicenter Study on Preterm Birth, which included […]

Hematological parameters: is there a difference between those released by the hematological analyzer and to the customer?
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0501
Highlights Recent automated hematology analyzers provide additional parameters to the complete blood count. Sixteen laboratories of a medium-sized municipality of Minas Gerais were interviewed. No laboratory released all parameters obtained from the hematological analyzers to the customer. Expanding our knowledge and implementing these parameters in complete blood counts is essential. ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to compare the hematological parameters released by hematological analyzers with those released in customer reports. Methods: We conducted a descriptive study in the laboratories of […]

Analysis of 108 flexible bronchoscopies for the removal of foreign bodies from the airways
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0391
Highlights Foreign body aspiration into the airways is common in adults and children, especially in the extremes of age. Coughing, wheezing, and dyspnea may occur and can be life-threatening. In airway foreign body, clinical suspicion is more important than imaging exams. Bronchoscopy under general anesthesia is safe and effective for removing foreign bodies; it ensures timely relief and prevents further complications. ABSTRACT Objective: To describe the clinical, bronchoscopic, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects between children and adults. Methods: This retrospective study […]

Correlation between thyroid fine needle aspiration and pathological examination: a 10 year retrospective study
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0418
Highlights Considering Bethesda V and VI as malignant findings, the fine-needle aspiration accuracy was 92%. Fine-needle aspiration showed 94.4% sensitivity and 86.9% specificity compared to histopathology. We found a positive and negative predictive value of 93.9% and 87.9%, respectively. When Bethesda III and IV were included as malignant, accuracy reduced to 80.1%. ABSTRACT Objective: To establish the diagnostic performance of fine-needle aspiration in detecting benign and malignant neoplasm in comparison with post-thyroidectomy histopathological findings among patients who received a thyroidectomy. Physiological responses during walking in men and women with intermittent claudication
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0120
Highlights There were no differences in the physiological responses to walking between men and women with intermittent claudication. Sex per se is not a factor that demands changes in walking prescription for patients with intermittent claudication. ABSTRACT Objective: Peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak), anaerobic threshold, walking economy, and cardiovascular responses during walking are used to guide and monitor walking training in patients with peripheral artery disease and intermittent claudication. Women with peripheral artery disease and intermittent claudication present greater impairments than […]

Relationship between chronic pain, depressive symptoms, and functional disability in community-dwelling older adults: mediating role of frailty
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0284
Highlights Chronic pain is directly associated with depressive symptoms and frailty. Chronic pain is not directly associated with functional disability. Depression and frailty are both directly associated with functional disabilities. Frailty mediates the association between chronic pain and functional disability. ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the direct and indirect effects of chronic pain, depressive symptoms, frailty components, and functional disability through a pathway analysis approach in a sample of community-dwelling older adults. Methods: Data of 419 participants were cross-sectionally evaluated for […]

Perinatal N(G)-Nitro-L-arginine methyl ester administration decreases anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in adult mice
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0302
Highlights Perinatal L-NAME treatment decreased anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in adult mice. Perinatal L-NAME treatment did not promote changes in locomotor activity in adult mice. Perinatal L-NAME treatment did not alter pain perception ABSTRACT Objective: We hypothesized that perinatal manipulations of the nitrergic system would affect adult animal behaviors. Methods: We tested this hypothesis by perinatally administering N(G)-Nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), a non-specific antagonist of nitric oxide synthase for 15 days and assessed anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in adult mice. […]

Anti-ribosomal P (anti-P) antibodies in patients with autoimmune hepatitis
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0375
Highlights Autoimmune hepatitis and systemic lupus erythematosus share several clinical features. Anti-P ribosomal antibody is a biomarker for systemic lupus erythematosus. The association between anti-P ribosomal antibody and autoimmune hepatitis has shown conflicting results. Our results showed no association between anti-P ribosomal antibody and autoimmune hepatitis. ABSTRACT Objective: Published studies have shown associations between anti-ribosomal P (anti-P) antibody and systemic lupus erythematosus with hepatic manifestations. This has been reported also in autoimmune hepatitis. However, the consistency of the latter association […]

Effects of face mask on pulse rate and blood oxygenation
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0349
Highlights Face masks are associated with ear discomfort. Face masks increase the pulse rate. Face masks reduce arterial blood oxygen saturation. Face masks are less tolerated by young men. ABSTRACT Objective: The World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend the use of face masks in public. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of face masks on pulse rate and partial blood oxygen saturation in patients without cardiorespiratory disorders. Methods: A total of 150 volunteers of […]

Tumor necrosis factor α, and agonist and antagonists of cannabinoid receptor type 1 and type 2 alter the immunophenotype of stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0405
Highlights Inhibition of endocannabinoid receptors and TNF-α led to an increase in HLA-DR, PD-L1, and PD-L2 levels in stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth. This study shows the interaction between mesenchymal stromal cells and the immune and endocannabinoid systems. ABSTRACT Objective To verify the involvement of the endocannabinoid system in the immunomodulatory profile of stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth, in the presence or absence of TNF-α, and agonist and antagonists of CB1 and CB2. Methods Stem cells […]
