Transrectal prostate biopsy complications: a prospective single center study in a mid-income country
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2025AO1437
Highlights ■ This prospective cohort study assessed prostate biopsy complications in 1,043 men. ■ The major outcomes included bleeding (Clavien-Dindo Grades 2–3 = 1.5%), infections (4.7%), and urinary retention (4.1%). ■ The key risk factors for infection were recent quinolone use, indwelling catheters, and high PSA levels. ■ Acute urinary retention was linked to untreated lower urinary tract symptoms, prostate volume, intravesical prostatic protrusion, and bladder wall thickness. ABSTRACT Objective: To identify complications following transrectal posterior biopsies in a public […]

Use of herbal medicinal products among patients in primary health care in a Brazilian southeastern city: evidence from the Prover project
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024AO0827
Highlights Herbal medicinal product use was 3.8%, with high formal prescription; however, it is accompanied by a high risk of interactions and redundancy. Unified Health System pharmacies are not the main source of herbal medicinal products, suggesting low service implementation. Women, people with mental disorders, and allopathy simultaneously users should receive attention. Non-white people are less likely to use herbal medicinal product, suggesting inequalities in accessing these treatments. ABSTRACT Objective: To determine the prevalence and factors associated with herbal medicinal […]

Comparing ensemble learning algorithms and severity of illness scoring systems in cardiac intensive care units: a retrospective study
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024AO0467
Highlights Gradient Boosting Machine and Random Forest models were built for prediction of mortality at cardiac intensive care units. A total of 9,761 intensive care unit stays of patients admitted under a Cardiac Surgery and Cardiac Medical services were studied. The AUROC and AUPRC values were significantly superior to seven conventional systems compared. The machine learning models’ calibration curves were substantially closer to the ideal line. ABSTRACT Objective: Logistic Regression has been used traditionally for the development of most predictor […]

Point prevalence and risk factors for pressure ulcers in hospitalized adult patients: a cross-sectional study
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024AO0811
Highlights Excess moisture can lead to maceration and contribute to skin breakdown. Superficial pressure ulcers were the most common and can be easily prevented. Healthcare professionals should be aware of PU risk factors, evaluate skin daily, and offer prevention. ABSTRACT Objective: To estimate the point prevalence of and risk factors associated with the development of pressure ulcers at a university hospital in Brazil. Methods: This study was conducted on 196 participants using a structured questionnaire, physical examination of the skin, […]

Risk of pulmonary aspiration during semaglutide use and anesthesia in a fasting patient: a case report with tomographic evidence
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023RC0628
ABSTRACT Pulmonary aspiration of gastric residues during anesthesia is a potentially fatal complication for which no specific treatment is available. The primary way to prevent its occurrence in the context of elective surgeries is adherence to fasting protocols. However, some clinical conditions can prolong the gastric emptying time, and the risk of aspiration may exist despite adequate fasting. Recognizing the risk factors for gastroparesis allows the adoption of preventive methods and is the primary way to reduce morbidity and mortality […]

Association of moderate and vigorous physical activity and relative muscle strength with neck circumference: a cross-sectional analysis of the Study of Health in Pomerode (SHIP-Brazil)
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0186
Highlights Neck circumference can be used in clinical evaluation for health monitoring. The prevalence of increased neck circumference is high and is associated with relative muscular strength in men and level of moderate and vigorous physical activity and relative muscular strength in women. Neck circumference is an important predictor of low moderate and vigorous physical activity and relative muscular strength in men, and the results are more pronounced in adult and older adult women. We suggest implementing exercise programs to […]

Factors associated with women diagnosed with syphilis who received prenatal care in a primary healthcare unit
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0046
Highlights History of sexually transmitted infections and first sexual intercourse by the age of 15. History of syphilis in the partner, and partners using illicit drugs were all positively associated with gestational syphilis. ABSTRACT Objective To estimate the prevalence of syphilis and its associated factors in women who were treated at public maternity hospitals and received prenatal care in a primary healthcare unit. Methods This cross-sectional study included 399 postpartum women. Interviews were conducted, and additional data were extracted from […]

Factors associated with multidrug-resistant bacteria in healthcare-associated infections: a pediatric intensive care unit case-control study
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2022AO6704
ABSTRACT Objective To investigate the prevalence of factors related to healthcare-associated infections, caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria, in a pediatric intensive care unit. Methods A retrospective case-control study conducted from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2018, in São Paulo (SP), Brazil. The study was carried out at the pediatric intensive care unit of a high-complexity, tertiary care general hospital. The study included patients aged 1 month to 19 years, admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit, diagnosed as healthcare-associated infections. […]
