Mobile application-based oximetry: a potential tool for appropriate referral of patients with respiratory symptoms examined via telemedicine
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0025
Highlights The evaluated method showed moderate reproducibility when compared to the gold standard practice. This new method had a high specificity and a low sensitivity. The observed high range of SpO2 levels between the methods could lead to a wrong patient referral. The use of telemedicine to assess oxygen saturation in patient with dyspnea is a viable resource, although requiring improvement. ABSTRACT Objective To calculate the positive likelihood ratio to determine whether telemedicine is able to optimize referral to […]

Molecular profile of patients with myelofibrosis: a 10-year experience
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0100
Highlights Karyotype was normal in 60% of patients and altered in 40%. The variants most often detected in the myeloid panel were: JAK2 (54%), ASXL1 (50%), TET2 (31%), and CALR (22%). The median follow-up of transplant patients was 2.4 years and the two-year overall survival was 80%. ABSTRACT Objective To analyze the karyotype test and myeloid panel with next-generation sequencing findings in patients with myelofibrosis, and to compare transplant characteristics in patients referred for bone marrow transplantation. Methods Retrospective, […]

Immunophenotypic characterization of acute leukemias in Bahia, Brazil
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0117
Highlights The incidence of acute myeloid leukemia was slightly higher in women. The most frequent aberrant marker in B-cell ALL was CD66c, followed by CD13 and CD33. Expression of CD34, HLA-DR, CD13, MPO, CD15, CD64, CD2 and CD7 was different in the non-APL and APL AML groups. Differences in expression of CD10, CD13, CD33, CD66c and CD34 were observed in different age groups with B-cell ALL. ABSTRACT Objective To characterize the immunophenotypic profile of acute leukemias in the population […]

Algorithm for screening and management of locomotive syndrome in elderly individuals and development of a short version of the 25-question Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale-Portuguese
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2022AO6349
ABSTRACT Objective To develop a short version of the 25-question Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale-Portuguese and to create an algorithm for locomotive syndrome screening and management. Methods The 25-question Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale-Portuguese was applied to individuals aged 60 years or older seen at the Geriatrics and Gerontology Department of Universidade Federal de São Paulo, between 2016 and 2018. Items of the 25-question Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale-Portuguese were submitted to exploratory factor analysis using the principal component method. Internal consistency was […]

Radical prostatectomies for treatment of prostate cancer: trends in a ten-year period in public health services in the city of São Paulo, Brazil
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2022AO0049
ABSTRACT Objective To analyze the characteristics of public health services related to radical prostatectomy, according to hospital volume of surgeries and stratified as academic and non-academic centers. Methods An ecological study was conducted using a database available in TabNet platform of the Unified Health System Department of Informatics. Number of surgeries, length of hospital stay, length of stay in intensive care unit, in-hospital mortality rate, and cost of hospitalization were evaluated. The hospitals were divided into three subgroups according to […]

Prostate imaging features on magnetic resonance imaging of young patients
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2022AO0024
ABSTRACT Objective To identify magnetic resonance imaging findings of the prostate in young adults, including symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate the main aspects of prostate imaging in young patients. Methods A total of 102 patients under 40 years of age, who underwent prostate magnetic resonance imaging between January 2016 and January 2019, were included in this study. The patients were divided into two groups: symptomatic for prostatitis (Group 1) and asymptomatic (Group 2). […]

Combination therapy with lansoprazole and cholecalciferol is associated with a slower decline in residual beta-cell function and lower insulin requirements in children with recent onset type 1 diabetes: results of a pilot study
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2022AO0149
ABSTRACT Objective To investigate the effects of combination therapy with cholecalciferol and lansoprazole on residual β-cell function and glycemic control in children with new-onset type 1 diabetes. Methods Children aged 6-12 years with type 1 diabetes were allocated to receive cholecalciferol and lansoprazole (Group 1) or no treatment (Group 2). Children were maintained on their respective insulin regimens and kept records of blood sugar and insulin doses taken. Children were followed at three-month intervals for six months. Changes in mean […]

Comparative analysis of somatostatin analog uptake between successfully irradiated and non-irradiated meningiomas
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2022AO0104
ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate whether there is a significant difference in somatostatin analog uptake in meningiomas treated or not with radiation therapy. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed comparing measurements of somatostatin analog (68Ga-DOTATATE) uptake in two independent groups of ten patients each – one consisting of patients with meningiomas previously treated with radiation therapy and another comprising patients who had never been submitted to radiation therapy. All patients underwent PET/CT and MRI scans in an interval shorter than 24 […]

Evaluation of laparoscopic skills in medical students
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2022AO0091
ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the laparoscopic skills of medical students and identify personal characteristics in terms of greater easiness in performing laparoscopic surgical procedures. Methods This study included medical students in the 6th semester of a Medical School in Brazil who answered 10 questions concerning their habits and characteristics. A laparoscopic platform and an abdominal synthetic model were used to assess surgical skills comprising the three following surgical steps: to pass the needle through the trocar and to place it […]

Sonographic signs of deep infiltrative endometriosis among women submitted to routine transvaginal sonography: clinical and imaging aspects
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2022AO0086
ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the prevalence of sonographic signs suggestive of deep infiltrative endometriosis and endometriomas in patients referred for transvaginal sonography as part of a routine annual gynecological evaluation. We also describe the clinical and imaging aspects associated with the incidental findings of endometriosis. Methods This was a retrospective observational study including women (n=339; aged 18-56 years) referred for transvaginal sonography as part of a routine gynecological evaluation (without clinical suspicion of endometriosis). Patients were asked about their symptoms. […]
