Telocyte (Tc) is a new type of classic interstitial cells, described by Popescu et al., ( ) in the human pancreas. Telocytes are found in several organs, including the human testis. ( ) They are long, thin cells ( ), with small cell bodies, a nucleus containing heterochromatin and presence of mitochondria in the periphery, in addition to a scarcely evident nucleolus. ( – ) They differ from other interstitial cells by their long moniliform cytoplasmic extensions, called telopodes (Tp) […]

A 34-year-old woman with a personal history of ulcerative rectocolitis for 5 years who were using sulphasalazine and mesalazine. The patient was admitted to the emergency unit presenting asthenia, dyspnea, fever, cough with hemoptoic sputum for 8 days, and oxygen saturating by 97% in room air. The computed tomography (CT) () showed sparse ground-glass opacities, although more evident in the posterior contour of lower lobes. She was hospitalized and tested positive for coronavirus infection identified through real-time reverse-transcription-polymerase-chain-reaction (RT-PCR) test. […]

A 63-year-old man came to the emergency room complaining of unverified fever and myalgia. Oropharyngeal material was collected for reverse transcription testing followed by polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and a chest radiography was performed (normal), and the patient was discharged to home isolation, due to his mild symptoms, until the test result. […]

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease and the second most frequent cause of non-scarring hair loss. Several treatments have been described but are associated to low efficacy, particularly in the more resistant clinical forms. Janus kinase inhibitors are a new therapeutic option, and it may become the first line treatment in the next few years, as topical or oral use.( – ) A 23-year-old female white female patient, with a history of alopecia areata for 12 years, presented diffuse hair […]

An 86-years-old male patient was admitted to the emergency department with a 1-day history of fever, dyspnea, and cough. After an assessment, there were no criteria that justified the patient’s hospitalization, therefore, he was dismissed and instructed to continue treatment at home. One week after the onset of symptoms, the patient returned with worsening dyspnea and persistent fever, which prompted his hospitalization. A chest computed tomography (CT) demonstrated typical coronavirus disease (COVID-19) findings(,) (), and the real-time polymerase chain reaction […]

A great concern in the current global scenario, the pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has been one of the main reasons for chest computed tomography requests, both in early evaluation or late control. COVID-19 patients present an increased D-dimer, a finding likely related to hypercoagulability status and marker of worse prognosis. ( ) We report two cases with laboratory confirmation of coronavirus and acute pulmonary embolism – an association already described. ( , ) A 49-year-old man who […]

A 36-year-old male patient from New Jersey, USA, with obesity, hypertension and diabetes, was admitted to our service presenting excessive sweating, tachypnea, tachycardia, fever (38.6°C), and blood oxygen level of 90%. The patient reported that 5 days before he had sought medical care in the United States for dry cough, nasal congestion, malaise and fever. Chest radiography () and computed tomography (CT) () at admission showed multiple small nodular opacities and diffuse consolidations in both lungs, with central and peripheral […]

A 62-year-old patient referred to coronary angiotomography due to ischemic changes detected in an exercise stress test. The patient reported hypertension and dyslipidemia, both controlled with drug treatment and regular physical exercise. She didn’t have any cardiovascular complaints and her physical examination was unremarkable. Coronary angiotomography showed common origin of coronary arteries through a short common trunk, emerging from the right Valsalva sinus and trifurcating into right coronary artery (RCA), circumflex artery (CxA) and anterior descending artery (ADA). The RCA […]

Varicella is a viral and usually benign disease, which commonly affects children. This disease main complication is bacterial superinfection of the skin. Ibuprofen administration, although not contraindicated, seems to increase risk of severe skin complications. – We report a case of a 21-month-old child with no family or personal relevant medical history who developed varicella with high fever since the second day of the disease. Paracetamol 15mg/kg every 8 hours and ibuprofen 7mg/kg every 8 hours were administered to the […]

A 75-year old female patient presenting chronic arterial hypertension, was admitted at the emergency department with moderate unspecific abdominal pain. A computed tomography of total abdomen with no contrast enhancement was requested due to altered renal function and suspicion of acute obstructive abdomen. The computed tomography sections ( and ) showed a fusiform aneurysm in the aortoiliac bifurcation, extending up to the right iliac artery. This aneurysm was causing erosion of the anterior aspect of L4 vertebral body, with bone […]
