A prospective and longitudinal cohort study assessing postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with cancer
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2025AO1139
Highlights High fatigue and nutritional risk at discharge improved over one year in cancer survivors. Psychological symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder, remained prevalent for one year. 66% of patients had lasting symptoms or impairments after 12 months of follow-up. Nutritional risk was resolved in the following year. ABSTRACT Objective: Post-COVID symptoms are frequent and can be debilitating, particularly in individuals with cancer. However, their impact on this population remains unclear. This study aimed to prospectively assess […]

Mild and moderate manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 infection, including hospitalization, in children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2025AO1312
Highlights ■ SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to mild-to-moderate disease in children with cystic fibrosis. ■ No worsening of cystic fibrosis was observed months after infection. ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 in children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis. Methods: This was a case-control analysis of clinical variables and pulmonary function test results in 43 children with cystic fibrosis, 17 (39.5%) of whom tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. Results: The infected children exhibited a higher frequency of […]

Brazil’s benign breast disease care profile and geospatial analysis
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2025AO1132
Highlights ■ Most outpatient consultations comprised diagnostic procedures. ■ In the past 12 years, medical care for benign breast diseases has cost >USD 65 million. ■ Women from North and Midwest Brazil had higher diagnosis and treatment displacement rates. ABSTRACT Objective: To quantitatively and geospatially analyze coverage and displacement for the diagnosis and treatment of benign breast diseases in the Brazilian Unified Health System between 2008 and 2019. Methods: Datasets from the Brazilian Ministry of Health were used to survey […]

Barriers to cardiac rehabilitation and their association with hospital readmission in patients with heart failure
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2025AO0713
Highlights ■ Barriers to rehabilitation: high inactivity rates (88.4%) and significant barriers, such as fatigue and lack of awareness, hinder recovery. ■ Professional supervision: only 1% of patients were enrolled in formal cardiac rehabilitation; however, those who received professional supervision experienced lower readmission rates (14.6% versus 35.1%). ■ Systematic gaps: addressing systemic gaps, such as coverage and referral to rehabilitation programs, is critical for improving patient outcomes and reducing rehospitalization rates. ABSTRACT Objective: This study assessed the barriers to cardiac […]

Use of convalescent plasma in COVID-19 treatment: is clinical severity more important than the intervention?
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024AO0563
Highlights ■ Convalescent plasma did not affect the outcomes. ■ Convalescent plasma improved some laboratory parameters but had no impact on clinical outcomes. ■ Dialysis and the World Health Organization severity score on day 0 influenced the outcomes. ABSTRACT Objective: This study compared the outcomes of two cohorts of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who received COVID-19 convalescent plasma transfusions between 2020 and 2021. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. We […]

Elevating care: assessing the impact of telemonitoring on diabetes management at a cutting-edge quaternary hospital
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024AO0748
Highlights Telemonitoring reduced hospital readmissions in patients enrolled in the diabetes program by 15.4%. Men patients who received telemonitoring had lower readmission rates than those who did not. There was a difference in the readmission rate between those who underwent telemonitoring and those who did not in patients aged <60 and >75 years. Patients who stayed >10 days and underwent postdischarge telemonitoring had a lower readmission rate than those who did not undergo telemonitoring. ABSTRACT Objective: To assess whether post-discharge […]

Mortality, hospitalizations, and persistence of symptoms in the outpatient setting of the first COVID-19 wave in Brazil: results of SARS-Brazil cohort study
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024AO0652
Highlights Previous influenza vaccination was associated with a reduced need for hospitalization after COVID-19 diagnosis. In 60 days of outpatient setting, four deaths occurred (three in the hospitalized and one in the non-hospitalized group). The persistence of more than two symptoms in 60 days was observed in 31.9% of patients. ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate deaths, hospitalizations, and persistence of symptoms in patients with COVID-19 after infection in an outpatient setting during the first COVID-19 wave in Brazil. Methods: This prospective […]

Cost and time of hospitalization for elderly people with bone fractures in a reference hospital
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024GS0493
Highlights Bone fractures were more frequent in women. The mortality rate among patients was 9.6%. The main trauma mechanism was falling from standing height. The total hospitalization cost ranged from R$2,006.53 to R$106,912.74. The mean daily cost was R$4,478.64. The longer the hospital stay for treatment, the higher the total cost. ABSTRACT Objective: To describe and analyze the aspects regarding the cost and length of stay for elderly patients with bone fractures in a tertiary reference hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional […]

Development and validation of predictive model for long-term hospitalization, readmission, and in-hospital death of patients over 60 years old
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2022AO8012
ABSTRACT Objective To develop and validate a high-risk predictive model that identifies, at least, one common adverse event in older population: early readmission (up to 30 days after discharge), long hospital stays (10 days or more) or in-hospital deaths. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study including patients aged 60 years or older (n=340) admitted at a 630-beds tertiary hospital, located in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. A predictive model of high-risk indication was developed by analyzing logistical regression […]

Association between beta-2 adrenergic receptor variants and clinical outcomes in children and adolescents with acute asthma
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2022AO6412
ABSTRACT Objective To investigate whether different genotypes of p.Arg16Gly, p.Gln27Glu, p.Arg19Cys and p.Thr164Ile variants interfere in response to treatment in children and adolescents with moderate to severe acute asthma. Methods This sample comprised patients aged 2 to 17 years with a history of at least two wheezing episodes and current moderate to severe asthma exacerbation. All patients received multiple doses of albuterol and ipratropium bromide delivered via pressurized metered-dose inhaler with holding chamber and systemic corticosteroids. Hospital admission was defined […]
