Cost of hematopoietic cell transplantation for hematologic malignancies from a transplant center in a developing country
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2026AO1834
Highlights ■ Costs compared across matched sibling donor, unrelated donor, and Haplo transplants. ■ A total of 177 patients with hematologic malignancies were analyzed. ■ Matched sibling donor transplants had the lowest 1-year costs. ■ Unrelated donor and Haplo transplants were significantly more expensive than matched sibling donor. ABSTRACT Objective: Hematopoietic cell transplantation is a resource-intensive procedure influenced by several cost drivers. The primary objective of this study was to compare the costs of matched-sibling (MSD), unrelated (URD), and haploidentical […]

Hospital costs of maternal near miss: a micro-costing analysis
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2025GS0933
Highlights ■ Micro-costing showed high per-admission costs (US$ 1,427.70) for maternal near miss. ■ Reimbursement values (US$ 973) underestimate true hospital costs. ■ Brazil’s economic burden estimated at US$ 86 million (2019). ■ Most maternal near miss events stem from preventable causes. ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to estimate the hospital costs of maternal near miss cases from both the institutional and Brazilian Public Health System perspectives in a reference maternitiy hospital. Methods: This cost-of-illness study used primary data collected […]

Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing (TDABC) applied in a chemotherapy department of a public reference oncology hospital
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2025GS0679
Highlights ■ Using the Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing method in healthcare services enables resource maximization with better control of processes and financing. ■ The estimated cost of treating a patient per antineoplastic session is R$ 470,35. ■ Such analyses can help establish pricing strategies and identify necessary adjustments to the financing model in oncology. ABSTRACT Objective: To identify the costs pertaining to the preparation and administration process of each chemotherapy treatment session in a public oncology hospital belonging to the Brazilian […]

Impact evaluation of technical notes issued by NATJUS on healthcare judicialization
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2025GS0766
ABSTRACT Introduction: Technical Support Centers of the Judiciary (NATJUST), provide health technology assessments to judges in health-related litigations against both public and private healthcare systems. These centers provide technical notes, that can assist Brazilian Courts in making provisional rulings and determining patient access to health services during legal proceedings. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of NATJUS technical notes on preliminary injunctions in lawsuits against the Brazilian Unified Health System. Specifically, we analyzed the alignment between judicial decisions […]

Clinical outcomes and direct cost analysis of rotator cuff repair surgery
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024GS0473
Highlights Rotator cuff repair surgery improves clinical outcomes and quality of life. Surgical procedures were highly effective with low complication rates. Arthroscopic surgery was associated with higher costs than open surgery. ABSTRACT Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and functional outcomes in patients who underwent surgical treatment for rotator cuff tears using open and arthroscopic techniques, and to evaluate the direct costs involved. Methods Retrospective cohort study with analysis of the data of patients who […]

Cost and time of hospitalization for elderly people with bone fractures in a reference hospital
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024GS0493
Highlights Bone fractures were more frequent in women. The mortality rate among patients was 9.6%. The main trauma mechanism was falling from standing height. The total hospitalization cost ranged from R$2,006.53 to R$106,912.74. The mean daily cost was R$4,478.64. The longer the hospital stay for treatment, the higher the total cost. ABSTRACT Objective: To describe and analyze the aspects regarding the cost and length of stay for elderly patients with bone fractures in a tertiary reference hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional […]
