Hand reanimation: functional free gracilis transfer or transfer of the distal tendon of the biceps to the flexor digitorum profundus and flexor pollicis longus as surgical options
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024AO0719
Highlights Hand reanimation for finger flexion during total paralysis remains a reconstructive challenge. Few surgical options are available for the late presentation of total paralysis of the hand and wrist. Functional freemuscle flap or transfer of the recovered biceps to the long flexors of the digits and flexor pollicis longus may be the last resort. Each case should be evaluated individually to select the best surgical option. ABSTRACT Objective: Hand reanimation for finger flexion in patients with total paralysis remains […]

Slide tracheoplasty for congenital tracheal stenosis with involvement of the carina and bronchi: a case report
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024RC0659
ABSTRACT A female newborn presented with respiratory distress at birth and was diagnosed with congenital tracheal stenosis. The stenosis was positioned at the distal trachea and compromised the carina and the right and left bronchi. She underwent surgical treatment using circulatory life support with veno-arterial peripheral extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and the airway was reconstructed using the slide tracheoplasty technique to build a neocarina. The patient had an excellent postoperative course, was successfully weaned from extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and invasive ventilation, […]

Are patient volume and care level in teaching hospitals variables affecting clinical outcomes in adult intensive care units?
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2023AO0406
Highlights Worse outcomes were more prevalent in the teaching hospital. Understanding the importance of teaching hospitals to implement well-established care protocols is critical. INTRODUCTION Some studies have reported the association between receiving hospital characteristics and the number of patients assisted with clinical outcomes.(,) Some authors have also demonstrated this relationship in scenarios such as coronary care units and care units for patients with diabetes.(,) Reportedly, hospitals with high admission volumes have better outcomes for surgical procedures; however, studies on […]

Benign prostatic hyperplasia surgical treatment trends in the Public Health System in São Paulo, Brazil
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2022AO6880
ABSTRACT Objective To describe and compare the number of surgeries, mortality rate, length of hospital stay, and costs of transurethral resection of the prostate and open prostatectomy for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, between 2008 and 2018, in the Public Health System in São Paulo, Brazil. Methods Ecological and retrospective study using data from the informatics department of the Brazilian Public Health System database. Procedure codes were “open prostatectomy” and “transurethral resection of the prostate.” The outcomes analyzed were […]

Clinical outcome analysis in surgical patients enrolled in a Second Opinion Program in spine surgery
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2022AO5791
ABSTRACT Objective To analyze pain, functional capacity, quality of life, anxiety and depression outcomes in patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery following use of the Second Opinion Program, and to present disagreements regarding diagnoses and therapeutic indications between the first and second opinions. Methods A prospective, observational cohort study with 100 patients enrolled in the Second Opinion Program who underwent lumbar spine surgery. Questionnaires addressing pain intensity, level of disability, quality of life, anxiety and depression were applied prior to and […]

Improvement in parameters of quality of life and uterine volume reduction after uterine fibroid embolization
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2020AO5458
ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate improvement in quality of life, reduction of uterine volume, and the correlation between these two variables after uterine fibroid embolization. Methods Data on quality of life before and after uterine fibroid embolization were collected from 60 patients using the Uterine Fibroid Symptom – Quality of Life questionnaire. In 40 of these patients, uterine volume information on magnetic resonance imaging examinations performed before and after uterine fibroid embolization was collected, and compared using the nonparametric Wilcoxon test […]

Swallowing, voice and quality of life of patients submitted to extended supratracheal laryngectomy
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2020AO5390
ABSTRACT Objective To describe functional and quality of life results after extended supratracheal laryngectomy. Methods In the period from September 2009 to January 2018, 11 male subjects were submitted to extended supratracheal laryngectomy. Swallowing abilities were assessed through videofluoroscopy and the clinical scale Functional Communication Measures of Swallowing. The voices were classified by means of the perceptual-auditory analysis Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice. All subjects completed a self-assessment questionnaire for voice and swallowing. Results Aspiration was found in four patients […]

Use of misoprostol in the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage: a pharmacoepidemiological approach
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2020AO5029
ABSTRACT Objective To characterize the use of the drug misoprostol for treatment of postpartum hemorrhage in pregnant women. Methods A descriptive observational study was carried out with secondary data from pregnant women who used misoprostol to treat postpartum hemorrhage in a reference public maternity, from July 2015 to June 2017. Clinical and sociodemographic profiles of pregnant women, how misoprostol was used and success rate in controling postpartum hemorrhage were characterized. Results A total of 717 prescriptions of misoprostol were identified. […]

Use of microRNAs in directing therapy and evaluating treatment response in colorectal cancer
DOI: 10.1590/S1679-45082014MD2839
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide. Survival and prognosis depend on tumor stage upon diagnosis, and in more than 50% of cases, the tumor has already invaded adjacent tissues or metastasis has occurred. Aiming to improve diagnosis, clinical prognosis and treatment of patients with colorectal cancer, several studies have investigated microRNAs as molecular markers of the disease due to their potential regulatory functions on tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes. This review aimed to summarize the main topics […]

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy and pathologic response: a retrospective cohort
DOI: 10.1590/S1679-45082013000400007
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the complete pathologic response attained by patients diagnosed with locally advanced breast cancer submitted to neoadjuvant chemotherapy based on the doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide regimen followed by paclitaxel. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of patients with locally advanced breast cancer, admitted to the Hospital de Câncer de Barretos between 2006 and 2008 submitted to the doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide protocol followed by paclitaxel (4 cycles of doxorubicin 60mg/m² and cyclophosphamide 600mg/m² every 21 days; 4 cycles of paclitaxel 175mg/m² every 21 days).
