Serum hepcidin measurement is related to clinical parameters and interferon-gamma in anemia of inflammation
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2026AO1756
Highlights ■ One-third of patients older than 65 years exhibit a hyperinflammatory state typical of inflammatory anemia. ■ The pathophysiology of anemia of inflammation is multifactorial. ■ Higher inflammation is associated with high prevalence of anemia and age-associated disorders. ■ The inflammatory state stimulates hepatocytes to produce hepcidin. ■ Understanding the immunomodulatory parameters in anemia of inflammation may be effective for differential diagnosis and therapeutic approaches. ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to assess the relationship between hepcidin, IFN-γ, iron biomarkers, […]

Highlights ■ ACE2 rs2285666 GG genotype increased the risk ofintensive care unit risk in women. ■ TNF rs1800629 A allele was associated with severe COVID-19 and invasive mechanical ventilation. ■ IL1A rs1800587 influenced disease severity and respiratory symptoms. ■ TNF polymorphism was associated with post-COVID, cough and fatigue. ABSTRACT Objective: We evaluated the influence of single-nucleotide polymorphisms in cytokine, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and uromodulin genes on COVID-19 severity and the persistence of symptoms in the post-COVID phase. Methods: Two cross-sectional cohort […]

Effects of host modulation through omega-3 dietary supplementation on inflammatory outcomes in periodontitis: a scoping review
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024RW0936
ABSTRACT Objective: Inflammation causes the progressive destruction of the supporting tissues around teeth in patients with periodontitis. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the immunological effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) as adjunctive therapy in patients with periodontal disease and identify potential biomarkers for the disease. Methods: This scoping review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines to investigate the impact of omega-3 therapy with or without acetylsalicylic acid on the immunological parameters of […]

Overview of the development, characterization, and function of human types 1, 2, and 3 innate lymphoid cells
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024RW1042
ABSTRACT Hematopoiesis is characterized by the differentiation and maturation of multipotent stem cells into hematopoietic cells. Common lymphoid progenitor cells differentiate into B and T lymphocytes; natural killer cells can also originate from common lymphoid progenitors. In recent years, a cellular subtype of lymphocytes, called innate lymphocytes, has been described. Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) play an important effector and regulatory role in innate immunity, and similar to natural killer cells, depend on the γc and Id2 chains for their development. […]

Inflammation and all-cause mortality in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2024AO0627
Highlights Higher plasma levels of CCL2 and lower plasma levels of TNF-α are associated with a greater risk of transfer to hemodialysis or mortality. Lower levels of IL-17 in the dialysate are associated with a greater risk of transfer to hemodialysis or mortality. These findings suggest that inflammatory biomarkers can be valuable tools for predicting all-cause mortality and transfer to hemodialysis in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to evaluate inflammatory biomarkers in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis […]

DOI: 10.1590/S1679-45082016AO3548
