Although with intact mucosa at colonoscopy, chagasic megacolons have an overexpression of Gal-3
DOI: 10.31744/einstein_journal/2020AO5105
ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the density of anti-galectin-3-immunostained cells, collagen percentage, mast cell density and presence of pathological processes in intestinal muscle biopsies of patients. Methods Thirty-five patients who underwent intestinal biopsy were selected from 1997 to 2015. Patients were divided into three groups: chagasic patients with mucosal lesion (n=13), chagasic patients with intact mucosa (n=12) and non-chagasic patients with no mucosal lesion (n=10). Histological processing of the biopsied fragments and immunohistochemistry for galectin-3 were performed. Additional sections were stained […]

Electrophysiological characteristics of Chagas disease
DOI: 10.1590/S1679-45082013000300006
OBJECTIVE: Chagas disease has become a global problem due to changing migration patterns. An electrophysiological study is generally indicated for assessing sinus node function, conduction through the atrioventricular node and His-Purkinje system, in addition to evaluating the mechanisms of arrhythmia. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of electrophysiological study findings in patients with Chagas disease. METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study of 115 consecutive patients with Chagas disease undergoing an electrophysiological study over the last three years […]
